Having a public Attunement practice has afforded me the opportunity to work with many different (social, cultural, ethnic, economical) clients and their varied situations, ranging from wellness to immanent loss of life. One of the challenging areas of work has been with mental health and wellness. I have shared Attunement with people who are dealing with a multiple personality disorder, depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, panic attacks, addictions, and fear. The gift of Attunement in these circumstances has been more than awesome. Attunement has helped – in conjunction with other therapies such as psychotherapy – individuals to mend the broken pieces of their lives and to clarify matters like self-respect, worth, meaning and purpose in life.
What is mental health? According to Mosby’s Medical Dictionary (8th edition, 2009), it is a relative state of mind in which a person is able to cope with and adjust to the recurrent stresses of everyday living in an acceptable way. Or from Wikipedia, mental health is a term used to describe either a level of cognitive or emotional well-being or an absence of a mental disorder. From perspectives of the discipline of positive psychology or holism, mental health may include an individual’s ability to enjoy life and procure a balance between life activities and efforts to achieve psychological resilience.
I have a friend and colleague, Liz Turner, who is a psychotherapist and Attunement Practitioner in Portsmouth, NH. She was recently interviewed on a radio show where she discussed Attunement, mental health, addictions, and psychotherapy. The link to this show ishttp://www.doctorgreens.com/radio.html#ten. You will need to fast forward to the 17-minute mark where Liz begins her interview. It is an interesting talk, which I enjoyed.
It is my observation that most adults in our civilization are not adults mentally. Most people stop their mental development in the mid-teens, the personality stage. Yes, the mind can be further educated to work with facts, but real understanding only appears when an individual continues to develop his or her facilities of feeling and spiritual expression. Look at television, watch the commercials, or other ‘entertainment’ offerings and you will discover that the material offered is presented at a 14-15 year old level. President Obama a few months ago gave his speech on the Gulf oil spill at an 11th grade level and most people did not understand it. The lack of a grounding spiritual identity – I am a Creator – leaves the personality aspect of an individual’s makeup to govern his or her living expression.
Wellness refers to a holistic approach in which mind, body, feelings, and spirit are integrated and the person lives from a spiritual identity. Attunement is a wonderful tool to help the maturing process of the human capacities and the ultimate shift of identity into one’s own Being. I am a Human Being.
